Recent work within the Old Court has revealed the west range of the medieval Clare Hall demolished in the 17C. Two unremarkable squares of stone were found in their original position. These prove upon analysis to be the bases of samson posts which supported the first floor. This enhances our knowledge of the position and structure of this long-lost building. This will appear in a monograph by CAU which is the first controlled excavation ever carried out within the historic complex.
